Naossnhq Condemns High Tuition Fees, Sends Signal to Oyetola. Read full statement here...

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF OSUN STATE STUDENTS, NATIONAL HEADQUEARTERS. (NAOSS).

Wednesday, June 23, 2021.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF OSUN STATE, ALHAJI GBOYEGA ISIAKA OYETOLA ON THE EXORBITANT TUITION FEES, PROHIBITION OF COOKING INSIDE THE UNIVERSITY’s HOSTELS AND OTHER ANTI-STUDENTS POLICIES OF THE MANAGEMENT OF THE OSUN STATE UNIVERSITY, OSOGBO.

We write as a non-profit-making and a non-governmental students’ union body with no political affiliation. NAOSS is the students’ wing of Osun State to promote and support equitable development in connection with the welfare of the students in the State.

We are in recipient of series of complaints hailing from the indigent students of the Osun State University, Osogbo, concerning the school fees of the said institution that has become an institution of money-making ventures.

Your Excellency Sir, it is a fact that the pedestal of every nation’s future rests on its educational strength. What then will be the future of Osun State when our very own State University has changed to Private institutions concerning unfriendly fees that can never be afforded by any struggling or average family?

Mr. Governor, it is pertinent to note that we have made several attempts to mediate between the management of the institution, and the students who are directly affected by the exorbitant fees. It is absolutely evident that same act of wickedness on the poor masses has been leading to the withdrawal of students who have no other option than to terminate their studentships because of the hardship placed on the fees. Yet, the management of the school seems unmoved.

We are not unaware that education is of right and not a privilege. Mr. Governor, Sir, we are lost on how to ascertain if there exists anything like rights to the students of the institution anymore, based on different scenarios that have been taking place in the said institution.

As if an institution fees of about Four Hundred and Fourteen Thousand Naira (#414, 000), is insufficient Sir, what broke the Carmel’s back is the internal memorandum from the office of the Dean of Students Affairs of the institution, dated 15th day of April 2021 with the reference number: UNIOSUN/SM/HW/2021/04/001. The memorandum was titled: PROHIBITION OF COOKING INSIDE UNIVERSITY HOSTELS which was signed by one Dr. O. O Abiona.

However, it is highly discouraging that the management of the institution has put absolutely nothing in place to replace how the students will cook or get themselves sustained. Rather, the money-monger management of the school subjected the poor students whose parents struggled to pay tuition fees that are sufficient to literally empower a family to equally be purchasing food of #1000 per meal. That is #3000 per day. Mathematically, a student will have to spend a huge sum of #90, 000 per month without calculating other expenses. There is absolutely no form of extortion that is more than this.

Your Excellency, if all of these excesses are not curtailed, it will be a speck of dirt that will continue to taint the white regalia of your administration. Enough is Enough!

Hinged on the above, we hereby appeal to you as a responsible leader, a father who understands and hearkens to the voice of the oppressed and the entire citizens of the State, to call on the management of the Osun State University to order between the day of publicizing this letter, and the next 21-working day.

Your Excellency, we are hopeful that you shall use your good office to address these issues as earnestly as possible.

Do accept from us the sincerest considerations that no other body can give.

E-Signed,

Comr. Sanusi Abdulwasiu  Role-Model

NAOSS National President.
