World Teachers' Day: FG Sets to Pay Undergraduates, & NCE Students

The Federal Government has approved a stipend of N75,000 each semester for students participating in degree programs in education at public universities in Nigeria, with a total of N75,000 payable each semester to students in degree programs in education.

In an effort to attract the brightest minds into the teaching profession, it has been reported that students studying for the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) will receive a N50,000 stipend per semester. This is part of the government's deliberate effort to attract the brightest minds into the teaching profession, as promised by President Muhammadu Buhari last year.
Malam Adamu, Minister of Education, made the news on World Teachers' Day, which was celebrated on Tuesday at Eagle Square in Abuja.

Sonny Echono, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, statedt on Adamu's behalf. He claimed that his ministry would work with state governments to ensure that students receive automatic employment upon graduation.

He stated that undergraduate students in public institutions studying for a Bachelor of Education, a Bachelor of Arts in Education, a Bachelor of Science in Education, or a Bachelor of Science in Education will be paid N75,000.00 per semester, whereas NCE students will be paid N50,000.00 per semester, as stated by the Federal Ministry of Education.

According to the National Council on Education, the federal government should devise a way by which respective state governments can provide automatic employment for NCE graduates at the Basic Education level.

This development has elicited a variety of reactions from the public, notably in the field of education.
