FEDERAL HIGH COURT HALTS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES FROM PASSING INFECTIOUS DISEASE BILL.


Justice Ifeoma Ojukwu of the federal High Court has ordered the stop of the NCDC infectious disease bill.

The NCDC infectious bill passed second reading immediately it was brought to the House of Assembly two weeks ago by Honorable speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.


The controversial bill has steered many criticism between many Nigerians on social media after it was claimed to contain infringement of the fundamental human rights. Ex-Kogi West senator Dino Melaye filed the suit FHC/ABJ/CS/463/2020, citing alleged breach of his right to freedom and life before the federal High Court in Abuja. He prayed the court to stop the passage of the Bill.

The court passed a motion exparte on the 13th of May 2020 which states "An order of this honorable Court is hereby made mandating the respondents to appear before this court on May 20, 2020, to show cause why the application of these applicants should not be granted"

"Should the respondent failed to attend court on the date stated for the hearing on this matter, the reliefs sought exparte shall be granted"

The court also summoned the Attorney general of the federation Abubakar Malami (SAN), the Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu, as well as the clerk of the National assembly over the bill.
